Preparation for the Year Ahead

Whilst the weather outside is decidedly wintry it does not stop thoughts of the year ahead
on the plot. There is always something to do. This time of year is really about getting
organised; what will you plant, where will you plant it. In other words have a map of the
plot in your mind or commit it to paper, it does not have to be a hard and fast rule but in
doing so allows you to then buy what you need.
Nothing is planted in January unless you have polytunnels where early herbs can be
started, but for the basic plot, it is a time to repair any raised beds, turn compost heaps,
renew paths and make sure tools are cleaned. Importantly if there is a break in the weather
try and keep the plot weed free...the benefit of no dig is that weeds are kept to a minimum .
My usual rule for what to grow is 'what do I like to cook and eat'. At this time of year my first
thought is potatoes, as the seed sets will be in the garden centres and available for delivery
online. For the past few years I have been growing the variety Kestrel, they are a very good
all round potato and quirky in their eyes are purple. They are a second early so I chit them
by placing them in egg boxes in a window so they develop decent green shoot ready to be
planted when the last frosts have gone. By chitting them it gives a head start as typically the soil is cold when planted. For the first time this year I have also bought Anya, these are a main crop so I won’t chit them, as they have a longer growing time.
In terms of seeds the aim is to have the first ones sown by mid February; Radish, Turnip,
Broad beans so these will be on the shopping list. Before this check your trays are cleaned
and ready to go, compost can be purchased nearer the time.
We are all counting the days down now to being back on the plot.
